Rachel (in her thirties) is a lawyer. Adopted daughter of a large family of magistrates appointed by Maxime (Michel Bouquet), ruthless and strange prosecutor. Despite this heavy family atmosphere, she has not left the world of recklessness. She frees herself by abandoning herself to strange reveries, interspersed with fantasies and nightmares which lead her to emancipate herself from her environment. The reality of a case will strike his life: Anna, his client has just committed suicide in prison.
In front of this woman's coffin, everything comes back to her, the visiting room, the crime scene, the story of a battered life. As children, they lived in the same village. As in a fairy tale, the gate of a castle separated them. One was a poor little girl, the other a rich little girl. So begins for Rachel an interior journey, where a pitiless class struggle, a difficult social and sexual emancipation come face to face.
The truth about the lawyer-client relationship comes to light and forces Rachel to face her obsessions, her repressed homosexuality, her haphazard choices and the cruel reality.
In the form of a tale, it is a reflection on a society in loss of landmarks and in conflict that all these characters tell us.
